INSPIRATION AND INFLUENCES

Jasmine takes inspiration from companies and artists that, like herself, work in creating performance that features elements of both Theatre and Dance; regardless of what they brand their company as.

Matthew Bourne's New Adventures

Sir Matthew Bourne and his dance company, New Adventures, was one of the first influences Jasmine came across at the age of 12. Although branded a Dance company, Bourne always seems to centre the narrative of the ballet at the centre before the traditional ballet technique. Sir Bourne works mainly by taking well known ballets, such as Sleeping Beauty, and updating and modernising them for the contemporary audience. He is most recognised for his all-male Swan Lake.

Pina Bausch

Pina Bausch's Tanztheater is something Jasmine studied in more depth during University. It is clear how important emotions and feelings are to Bausch's work and this is something Jasmine identifies with. Jasmine has never been someone who can dance just to look pretty, she finds there has to be a narrative, theme or emotion in order to truly perform the routine and provide a platform where the audience could possibly relate to the performance.

Theatre Ad Infinitum

Jasmine was first exposed to this Theatre company in Bristol and since has seen them perform twice at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Their piece Translunar Paradise was one which resonated with Jasmine. The use of an accordian, one voice and movement together to tell a story of a couple. It was performances like this that prompted Jasmine to explore crossing Theatre and Dance together. Although not all their productions as silent, all are heavily movement based and vary in the styles they use depending on the narrative.
